The New Riders of Purple Sage incorporates country, western, and rock, all at once. We had jut formed the band around our longtime friendships and John Dawson’s new songs. In the early 1970’s the New Riders of the Purple Sage had the good fortune to be opening for the Grateful Dead on concert tours throughout the country. As a result, their sound was placed somewhere between country rock and psychedelic rock, although the agreed-upon philosophy kept it closer to the former. The New Riders were signed to Columbia Records in 1971 by Clive Davis and their eponymous first album, New Riders of the Purple Sage, was released in September of that year to widespread acclaim.
